Charity Shop Sales Haul!

Perhaps you didn't know that charity shops have sales too?  Well, dear reader, they do indeedy!
Over the last couple of weeks some of my local charity shops have been having a bit of a January Sale going on; one at half price for everything, another at everything for a £1 (this ran for about a week) and another had a special all-clothes-for-a-£1-day.  I applaud this sensible approach of clearing out older stock that has been hanging around for a while, so that they can make room for new donations.

The temptation when everything is a £1 is to scoop up armfuls of stuff, willy nilly and find yourself lumbered with things you didn't really want or need and have to donate them back again.  I've tried to be more selective but have picked up some super bargains that I'm going to share with you here whether you like it or not.

I rarely buy clothes from charity shops but the all-clothes-for-a-£1-day did tempt me to peruse the rails; it was a bit of a bun fight and the shop was heaving but I found a couple of useful knits.  My approach when buying second hand clothes is to only buy good quality brands and to thoroughly check for stains and moth holes etc.  I found a cable-knit navy cardigan from Lands End - looks good as new and navy goes with everything.  I also picked up a pretty little Kew cardigan in my favourite colour palette and this will look super in spring/summer with a skirt or jeans.  There was also a pretty pink cashmere cardigan for a humble £1; a little vintage number which I would like to try and up-cycle a bit by adding some sexy new buttons.

Have a look at this little bundle of vintage goodliness; two glass egg cups, a set of 4 pink glass sherbet dishes,an Estee Lauder powder pot from the 70's and a Stafforshire pottery preserve pot.  All these items cost a total of £1.50, hurrah!  The jam pot is particularly lovely and was made during the time that Clarice Cliff was designing for Wilkinson; a little Art Deco beauty in near perfect condition.  The vintage powder pot is super too; I found one of these last year and made some honey and lemon, sugar hand scrub to put in it as a Christmas gift for my sister.

Oh, and there's more; two pretty  flower pictures in frames and 5 meters of  William Morris fabric by Sanderson all for a bargaintastic £1 each.  I seem to remember our living room curtains being in a very similar William Morris fabric during the late 70's/early 80's - as a teenager I hated it back then, but now I'm rather fond of it.

I have decided that I am going to start up an Etsy shop to sell a few things as I really have too many vintage lovelies to display and enjoy properly.   I asked my current husband what I should call my shop e.g. Giddy Aunt Lola Vintage and he suggested Vintage Bintage!  Any ideas?

  2. I'm envious-whenever I pop into a charity shop I just see stuff that isn't worth buying, even for £1! Mind you, I rarely get to look around on my own so that probably doesn't help much :)

    1. The key is to visit very regularly but you don't have to spend long in the shop - I would say my visits are less than 2 minutes in each shop on a quick day. :)

  4. Nice stuff :)

I volunteer in a charity shop every Friday morning and always get tempted to buy something too! The amount of brand new donations we get clothes-wise is ridiculous, people just cant be bothered to take things back for refunds it seems!

  8. Ahh a fellow charity shop fiend. I do love a good bargain and you certainly have found many in this haul! I have had to cut down my charity shop and car boot crawls as I'm on a strict budget for the next year but still find excuses to pop into one now and then :)
